The Lamborn Foundation
_
Iʼm writing to you, the Kidsʼ Pasta Project, about the Lamborn Foundation because I
believe it is one of the least recognized but longest running ongoing contributors to our
community in the valley!
The Foundation has been active in music and the arts hosting playwrights and authors,
directors and producers for the last 25+ years to join with local youth and create
community productions that celebrate the talent of this valley. Many have found their
calling through these events (or one of their callings) and when coupled with the
monumental gift of Lucia Vorysʼ violin lessons for all for so many years, made possible
at nominal to no cost and including available violins in a variety of sizes for now, 4
generations of North Fork Valley folk there is much to applaud.
The Foundation has been behind many incarnations of alternative schools including,
most recently, the Lamborn Vision School, CCE, The Lamborn Valley School and Local
Organic Venturesʼ Internship programs. The Foundation has hosted national alternative
school events at the campus, Native American Youth solar energy workshops, Solar
Energy International classes for many years along with weddings and many community
events for other non-profits at low to no cost for local folks.
2 years ago what became known as the Hippie Re-Union was hosted on the campus,
re-uniting folks that had populated this valley 40 yrs ago and at some point moved away
with those who remained, honoring the achievements of many of those early inhabitants
and appreciating the influence life in this valley had had on their character development
often bringing their grown children to the event to see “what had impacted their parentsʻ
lives so much”.
The Foundation has hosted concerts featuring internationally acclaimed musicians to
bring culture to the people of our valley who might otherwise not have an opportunity to
ear “live” performances of such gifted musicians.
Educational trips for youth to Mexico and other parts of this country have been
supported in part or in full by the foundation throughout the last 25+ years. The Harvest
Your Health and Ground to Table cooking series have been Foundation programs
together with internships on the farm campus in a variety of disciplines ranging from
farming and gardening to livestock management and orcharding to retailing skills and
thrift store management. Local youth continue to have access to low cost
horsemanship lessons, again, who otherwise would not have had such opportunities
and needy individuals have been “sponsored” when dire dental or mental health needs
were not able to be met by other non-profit or social agencies. Youth-at-risk have been
mentored into successful careers and life-skills and those with special needs have often
found safety to learn skills and develop self-esteem through the programs the
Foundation has sponsored over the years.
The Lamborn Foundation has been a endless human, social arts and educational
resource quietly functioning without fanfare in the background of life in Paonia touching
many thousands of lives through the years sometimes without the direct knowledge of
the recipients.
Many of the young people who have been empowered through their experience of
programs the Foundation provided have come back into the community and become
contributors as teachers, entrepeneurs, farmers and gardeners, performers and socially
contributing citizens of this valley.
Lucia Vorysʼ music lessons have enabled young musicians to venture out of our valley
and participate in state and regional performances as well as become performers right
here at home with their family members and others. Some of our local, highly
successful professional musicians have been Luciaʼs students.
The Foundation has built bridges where no hope existed for children in despair whose
family circumstances offered no resources emotionally or financially and who perhaps
might have become societal burdens had the Foundation through its programs not been
here to intervene, offer encouragement, skill building, caring and committed adult
relationships and, in some cases, housing for years as these youth matured into
contributing members of our society. Some have traveled the world to contribute to
others as they were contributed to. The model of service has imprinted upon many of
the youth who have come through Foundation programs and those who have gone on
to have children have demonstrated that, what we are given does not have to repeat
itself into the next generation, as they are raising emotionally and physically healthy
families. They come back at times to show their children the place and people who
influenced them.
The Lamborn Valley and Vision Schools bridged the gap between educationally
alternatively minded families and students and the “public school” world for many years
providing a farm based campus along with standard style academic offerings.
I hope you will consider the Foundation as a recipient for your reward as these times
have seriously stretched the budgetary resources available but more importantly
because so many have no idea of the long lived gifting that the Foundation has provided
in so many areas to the local population.
The Foundation has built bridges between disparate groups of religious and social
beliefs and provided opportunities to people of many nationalities from the USA and
abroad to come together and develop life and relationship skills plus share a love for the
land and our fellow human beings that is as basic to our continued well-being as a race
as are the resources of clean air and water!
I am sure I have neglected to re-count many of the services and contributions of the
Foundation throughout itʼs history but I wanted to get this in for your consideration.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Chrys Bailey
